My son took it. I think it was 30. And appointment not necessary but will GREATLY cut your time. My son couldn't get an appointment, but got a confirmation number( sortof an appointment lite). One person who had an appointment got there after we did. Was in and out in 20 minutes. We got done in about an hour and a quarter. And we left before people who had been there over 3 hours when we left.

If you walk in prepared to wait a couple of hours. I went the other day and there weren't that many people. Make sure you have all needed documents before you go in. There are kiosks at certain supermarkets that you can pay your registration at as well if you would like to avoid going to the dmv.
