Many residents of the city of El Cerrito are deeply grateful to Elaine Howle, our State Auditor, and her staff for conducting a review of every California city. That work resulted in the list of local governments at high financial risk, ours being #7. El Cerrito was among those that were recommended for audit. Two days ago (2/26/20), we learned that our city's audit was approved unanimously by the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC). Before the State Auditor's report was published, most residents had no knowledge of our city's fiscal situation. Now, we will find out the details. One final comment: in listening to the broadcast of the JLAC meeting, I was impressed by Elaine Howls expertise and her commitment to the people of California. She is an extraordinary public servant.

From a former employee's perspective, senior staff aka supervisors have the poorest management skills I've seen at any organization that I have worked for. My supervisors lacked basic communication skills that are meant to increase team morale and communicate instruction to new auditors. They made going to work super miserable and if you're applying for any auditing position here, look away and elsewhere, and you'll thank yourself and the unnecessary stress and time wasted at an organization in which senior management does not take employee complaints, even when these same work environment complaints are coming from dozens of auditors.

bad place to work with socially inept supervisors. If you're looking for a job, look elsewhere in the state or in the private sector. You're worth more than how the supervisors treat you here.

You can ask your legislator to request an audit through the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC). Unlike in other states, in California the auditor does not start audits independently (other than local "high risk" audits).
Call the office and request a PRA (public records act) with details of what you are looking for.
