They do not fix. They CAN refer you to somewhere that will.. Depending on what you paid for the camera, you might want to buy a new one. Camera repair costs are almost as much as it cost to replace the item. I'm a pro photog and the lens obstruction is either a motor or a gearing issue. Once you have the issue itself repaired, the auto focus might be a tad bit off because they fix the mechanicals and POSSIBLY might not be able to calibrate the autofocus back to factory settings because that entails calibrating the lens to the sensor which Kodak themselves have the equipment for. Kodak cameras are fairly inexpensive considering the prices of pro DSLR and Pro Mirrorless cameras. I just looked and it's priced just under what I paid for my last lens. I'd say, purchase a new one and INSTRUCT your son to make sure to power it down completely (which retracts the lens) before putting in a bag, etc. That's typically why those P&S cameras with retractable lenses have those lens issues.

SB-300 and SB-400 (discontinued but great) are compact and an improvement over the built in flash in terms of power. An old used SB-600, 700, 800 or 900 would give you more power and versatility, including some wireless and remote flash options without buying extra gear. Newer Nikon flashes other than the SB-300 are overkill for a P1000. Another option is some of the third party brands, like Godox and Youngnuo. You should ask yourself why you want or need an external flash when there's one built into the camera. If you need more power, I'd say buy a used SB-800 or SB-900. That's what I did (for another Nikon consumer camera)!

While I don't own a Pentax, I suspect that you put the camera in a full auto or program mode. I would start by reading the manual cover-to-cover. Today's cameras are powerful and complicated machines. After you are sure that you understand the workings of the camera, you should know that B&H is a good place to deal with. If you are still having problems start by giving them a call or going back in. I imagine the Pentax team there will help, especially if you have done your due diligence.
