AWESOME PARK!! We were looking for something to do with our kids. I found that park online and decided to try it. But… WOW! We were really amazed by how big it was and all the thing that you can see. The gardens, the wildlife, the farm… Highly recommend 🙂

This was a beautiful park that is free and open to the public. Certain things do cost money on a per diem basis but to explore the park, walk through the various gardens, listen to music, or participate in the activities hosted by the park are all free. The park is quite large so make sure you bring comfortable clothes, shoes, and water. There were several ideal places for an intimate or small family picnic too. Parking was free where we were, but limited so street parking may be needed. I did not see anyone on bikes or scooters so I am not sure if these things are prohibited or not.

We’ll be back. Family friendly 100 acre state, come enjoy seeing snakes, fish, eagles, owls and farm animals up front or try to climb on the new structure inside the nature center (we would have missed it had it not been mentioned to us by the front desk.) We’ve been here multiple times and it keeps improving. This time we got to also enjoy other parts of such as the Japanese garden and see the eagles.

Maymont has always been one of my favorite spots in Richmond. It's a must see for tourists especially if you have kids. The gardens are incredible and the zoo petting farm is so cool for the young ones. They've even had some really good music there in the last few years. I hope they continue with this in the future! I can't wait for the spring and all the gorgeous flowers and blooms!!!

Tables I'm not sure. I'd be surprised if there aren't. However if you have a blanket to take with you and put down can have a picnic literally anywhere in the park. Except maybe the animal pins, might not be a good idea unless you brought extra food 😂
Most of the park is wheelchair accessible, with the exception of some of the Japanese garden. I was able to get a baby stroller through the majority of the park with no problem.
You can not bring dogs 8n the zoo or the aquarium but there is a dog park near by and there are three lakes that you can walk your dog around the dog park is called Barker field
Hi Mary - There is no longer a tram here at Maymont. We do, however, offer private Golf Cart Tours of the property if you're interested! You can find more information at https://maymont.org/visit/enhance-your-visit/golf-cart-tours
I doubt it. Maymont is a very quiet park, unless they are having an event.
Maymont is free unless there's a special event or occasion. There's also a cost for the nature center. They do have boxes at the entrances for donations (suggested amount of $5) to help maintain the park.
You would want to contact Maymont management about this. I have seen Kona Ice in there before so there's definitely a way to go about it. Hope this helps.
No, sorry. Pets are not permitted at Maymont since we have farm animals and wildlife in our care that we must protect. Only service animals are allowed.
There are also guided tours available for a reasonable fee.
Hi Doug - We have a wide range of volunteer opportunities available, from event support like Monica mentioned, or helping with horticulture/grounds maintenance and more. To learn more about volunteering at Maymont and to apply to volunteer your time, please visit https://maymont.org/support/volunteer/
It is free, but there is a $5 suggested donation per person. The nature center does require you to purchase tickets before touring.
The parking is free. Yes, it is open every day but there are specific hours.
The lakes are not part of Maymont. There's only a pond in the Japanese Garden here, and it is not for fishing. I think you are referring to the lakes in Byrd Park, and I'm pretty sure you can fish in the one closest to The Robins Nature & Visitor Center at Maymont - Shields Lake. It is managed by the City of Richmond Parks & Rec department.
Yes it will be but be prepared a lot of people go there for fire works and cook out the zoo will be closed unfortunately
The grounds and gardens are open until 7pm, during daylight savings time. The indoor attractions, including the Nature & Visitor Center and the Maymont Mansion, are open until 5pm.
Just go to the nature center building at Maymont and the staff will gladly help you.
Contacts on their website.
Donation request, but no fee. Ocassionally there is an ice cream truck
Right now the Maymont mansion is not open, but we are working on getting it reopened soon! Be on the look out on our website and social media for an update.
If you want to see the whole park and the Nature Robin Center then you will need at least 3 - 4 hours. So you can plan accordingly
There is no cost to get it in and see all types of Gardens in Maymont but you have to buy tickets to visit the Robin Nature Center located within Maymont
No it does not. Downtown had a water area that looked like there are boat rentals
The weekend we were there. There was an ice cream truck. Vending machines and animal feed also available another's have mentioned.
Dogs (pets) are not allowed at Maymont. Trained service dogs are allowed and must be on leashes.
Yes, its Absolutely free to visit.. make sure you wear comfortable shoes.. Big place to walk.
Hi Connie - Unfortunately, we don't have Nature Center tickets available for purchase right now. We are undergoing renovations and expect to reopen in early spring 2020, but we have not determined the new admission price yet. You could purchase a Family Membership, though, which allows for unlimited free admission to the Nature Center for a year for two adults and up to 6 children. www.maymont.org/membership
Peak foliage at Maymont starts around the beginning of November.
There are no ponds at Maymont for fishing. The pond in the Japanese Garden is inhabited with Koi, Japanese carp, that are part of our animal family. There are ponds for fishing in Byrd Park which is adjacent to Maymont.
Maymont offers private and group carriage rides for two to six people at a time. For more information and to book your carriage ride, please visit https://maymont.org/visit/enhance-your-visit/carriage-rides
You are correct. In the basement. You'll see the stairs leading down.
Yes, there is plenty of parking. You need to walk from the parking to the mansion
Hi Steven - There are no set times for carriage rides, but you're able to schedule a ride for time that works best for your group. Pricing depends on the length of the tour and how many people are in your group. For more information, please visit our website: https://maymont.org/visit/enhance-your-visit/carriage-rides. To make a reservation, call our Carriage Department at 804-358-9492. We hope to host you for a ride soon!
It's a donation for the mansion so you donate what you would like. The grounds are free to enter so the gardens are free. There's a different price for the zoo they have there. So the price depends on what you plan to do.
They do have a jazz concert in August, I am not sure if you are able to use it on your phone, I would print it out just in case you aren't able to use the phone.
Could I have a wedding reception at Maymont?
You can't fish in Maymont, you can fish any lake in Byrd Park though (with a fishing license). I don't know the stock, but they are all stocked up.
Yes, yo can
No, she's not talking about the moon bridge; that one is wooden. The stone bridge with three circle openings is in the field just south of the nature center.
Yup
There is a fee for professional portrait photography including bridal, senior and family photos, and those must be scheduled in advance. A permit or fee is not required for photos of the gardens themselves. https://maymont.org/facility-rental/photography/
The grounds are open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily and 10:00 AM -7:00 PM March-October. Carriage rides are Tuesdays-Sundays from 12:00 PM-5:00 PM. Rides range from $50-$100 based on how many people you have.
You also might want to bring some quarters to get food for the animals at the farm. And the house like mention is a suggested donation.
Yes! We offer golf cart tours on Saturdays and Sundays during the spring, summer and fall. You can book now for tours that begin the weekend of April 6. (We do not offer golf cart rentals for you to drive yourself.) https://maymont.org/visit/enhance-your-visit/golf-cart-tours/
No sleigh rides with snow on the ground, but there are a few great places to go sledding.
Kenneth is correct. The grounds and gardens are open, but exhibits are closed.
The hampton st entrance goes right to the field where the concert is
It's free although they do like donations of whatever anyone can afford to go towards food for the animals. They do have an inside exhibit which is the only thing that cost but its optional to view but it's not expensive if you to choose to. I think the last time we went it was $8 for that particular salt water etc exhibit. Other than that the outside park is free (outside animals and petting zoo-bring quarters so kids if you have any can feed the animals at the petting zoo farm) the gardens, waterfall. Its beautiful. Wear tennis shoes due to steep hills. When it's not humid and its warm but not extremely hot is the best time of the year in my opinion. We've been cold, hot, and perfect weather.
You can schedule golf cart tours on the weekends. I believe they might have tours on some Thursdays and Fridays as well. They start at the Nature and Visitor Center.
Yes and they have a promotion out for discounted golf cart tours.
Sorry, no bikes at Maymont
Parking lot is very tiny
There are two gardens, a nature center from 10a-5p with exhibits, a small farm area and 100 acres of gorgeous grounds to walk, play or picnic
Access yes, normally it's a long walk, have to inquire about parking closer
Yes, we had music playing for a wedding we had under the long gazebo
Bicycles are banned in maymont park, but there are many trails nearby, including one that runs beside it. Check out James River Park System for the trails, including the North Bank Trail which goes past the park.
You can give a donation, but there is no cost to get in.
Are you in the Farm parking lot?
Guided tour is better. There are specific timings for it, so make sure you know that before you go.
No, I wouldn't do that here. It's right next to Byrd Park which would be fine for that activity, but Maymont isn't the place for that.
Just walk in, and do your 📷 shoot
Yes, it will be held outside on the Carriage House Lawn, close to the Historic Estate entrance at 1700 Hampton Street
Ok Thanks my girlfriend just said it's a new area and its very nice
I'm not sure what open house you're referring to, but the park hours are from 10-5 daily and the Maymont house tours are from 12-5 (closed Monday).
No. There are some vending machines but no restaurant.
