The service is poor, it is better to go to New York to do the paperwork rather than waste your time and money there. My stepfather was visiting us and lost his passport. After reporting the loss to the police, he went to the consulate to explain the situation and find out how to proceed. The consulate said he needed to make a new passport (normal, not temporary) and that he would arrive in time before his flight home. Closer to the departure date, we call back to have news and we are told that the passport will arrive after the scheduled date of the flight. We explain the problem again, and we are told that we just have to postpone the flight (which would have been expensive given the date!). We then ask for a pass (which is a right and cannot be refused), but we are told that it is not possible. We insist by reading the page of diplomatie.gouv.fr, and there we are told that in fact it is impossible to obtain a pass when a passport application is in progress (this rule is not written anywhere) . Finally, the person tells us that she is doing us a favor by canceling the passport application (but without refunding the 96€!) in order to be able to apply for a pass (68€). The person on the phone was arrogant despite obviously having no idea of ​​French law or border procedures, which is a shame for a consulate. She has shown no empathy for a relatively old person who finds herself stuck abroad, and has no motivation to do her job. It's a complete shame.

Not sure where the positive reviews come from… 1/ you can’t easily book appointments as the website is totally outdated 2/ the consulat rarely answer the phone during the 2hrs period they have 3/ you can’t enter the building without an appointment… In other words: you can’t book, you can’t call to raise that you can’t book, and if you show up then you can’t go up! Ridiculous.. All this without talking about the people I interacted with… very, how to say… entitled, disrespectful, arrogant…?

The French Consulate at Boston does not answer its phones during the very limited hours they claim to be open, 2-4 pm M-F, and does not respond to email. I have tried phoning dozens of times, following both the French and English menus, both of which lead to waiting periods that time out eventually with no possibility of leaving a message. The consulate is a classic combination of Northern charm and Southern efficiency in my experience.
