Most likely you will receive a replacement pair at no charge a few day later that will be shipped directly to the store as was the case for me but I can not recall ever hearing that anyone was ever charged for faulty headphones. If the headphones are a model that no longer is being sold, they still have a replacement in their warehouses but my best guess is that apple will replace the model with an upgrade and a new warranty.
