Take the phone to them to check it first and they will advice you on what to do next
Apple Store on Michigan, especially the Genius Bar is extremely helpful. They will do a full check on your phone and easily figure out what the problem is with no charge for looking at it. If your phone is less than 1 year old it's probably still under the manufacturer's warranty. So if it's a malfunction of the hardware, NOT due to water damage or something like that, then it's possible it's still covered. My question to you is WHY would you spend so much on a phone and not pay the extended warranty? Anyway, Apple is NOT into ripping people off, they provide excellent service. Go there and ask for help. If there IS any charge, it will be minimal. Good luck and ask if you can add an Apple Service Plan.
