I absolutely loved this tour! Went on the Monday history tour and our guide Jason was amazing. He knew a lot and let everyone ask questions. This place is also dog friendly which makes it even better! I cannot wait to come back and spend the night!!!

An unexpected and unforgettable experience - 5 stars because it's important for citizens to see and feel the things you will see and feel there. Tip: if you're pressed for time, skip the 90 minute prison tour and just walk around. It's permitted, it's free, and 10 or 15 minutes in this horrible place is about all a rational person can take.

Great tour that lasted almost 2 hours. Guide was very knowledgeable about structure and innate history. If in area you must stop

One of the coolest stops on our trip. We really like a lot of the ghost shows on TV and this is one of the places that a lot of those groups come. Even though we just did the 90 minute guided tour it was really cool to see and hear about …

Day tours have no age restrictions. Be advised that some information discussed on the day tours, may not be suitable for some children. Paranormal events have set age restrictions. All overnight investigations are for the ages of 18 and over. Twilight tours are for the ages of 13 and up, and Thriller Thursdays are for the ages of 15 and up. The haunted house is not recommended for anyone under the age of 12.
Friday and Saturday then the last 2 Sundays of October
It is not
No all tours are supervised but there are some overnight options with a little more freedom
I'm so down for that
Go to the box office at the Penitentiary, most likely.
Sorry jus got this post , the tour was during the haunted house so I thought I could only do 1, so I did the shortest which was 14....I know the other 1 I really wanted 2 do was more maybe 20-30 but it would of been worth it as u get free range....it's all worth it w me, and it was cheaper that Trans alysumn but that place is well worth it 2!!!
It's no longer run as a prison bc the prisoners sued the state due to deplorable living conditions
Time warp. Great question 🤔
Yes
It was one of the bloodiest prisons in the world and it housed every gang you could ever imagine and some of the inmates where transferred from the mental institution as well Moundsville is actually all native American burial grounds crazy but true
Not that I'm aware of
They have a website with phone number contact them and arrange it. They are usually booked solid this time of year though.
As previous answer
Being very in tune with paranormal things. I only had one small experience and it wasn't even something pointed out by the guide. It's definitely worth a look
It's probably 145 miles. Depending on traffic, 3 hrs
Around 30. Bucks a person. You tour thru the prison cell block cellar and medical ward. Creepy we did at Halloween time while the haunted house was going on in the other part of prison
The Penitentiary offers no heating or cooling (one reason it was shutdown as a working Penitentiary in the first place) so the hours change from season to season. Call and ask what their current lineup is.
The floor tour begins with a guided tour of the museum (indoors) and outside lots (prison cells, a church, a barn where hangings were done). You can participate in a mock hanging as well. The tour concludes with an actual spirit conjuring where you can witness an actual presence (in case you had doubts). I'm not sure what the current price is, call and ask.
You cannot stay in the jail regularly, but during the summer they have some summertime "supernatural overnight events". Otherwise there are local hotels nearby to stay if you are visiting.
You can. I'm wanting to say it's around $50-100 for the whole night.
Yes, call the WVBOP.
But there is a small diner around the corner, the locals go there and good price, fast service.
Adding on to William's statement. That did contribute, but there were also 94 executions, 7 I believe from the electric chair and the rest from hanging. In addition, many died from natural causes, disease, murders by the prisoners, and other causes. More than 750 people died there, so a very active place for paranormal activity.
I did a day tour when i went. I bought tickets in person and tours started on the hour.
Ghosts and spirits once exist. No one knows what one can see , if going there alone. Ghosts may become friendly.
No.. they don't recommend anyone under the age of 13 however
Our day tours will end for the season on November 30th. We may extend to a few weekends in December depending on the weather.
You can do a online search of the history or go to their website wvpenntours.com
We had ours on our phones from Groupon
Yes, but only during certain nights
Yes
My tour guide CJ as well as many of the other guides on the tour were guards at the prison. Call Moundsville and ask to speak with someone in charge of historical items, documents for the prison.
Thanks bonnie
They do have overnight stay during certain times of the year. Call for dates and prices
They share the facility with law enforcement and they often have training exercises, so some days may be "no fly".
They have tours every two hours during their open season. You'll have to check but I'm pretty sure they are closed until next spring.
Yours r all year long
They are open through November 30th. Yes
