Each time I call, they are so helpful in helping answer all of my questions!

I live in another county but needed information from Polk County. It’s like anything with government agencies hit or miss. I can say I was fortunate dealing with staff. I started with Permitting and ended with the Records department. The staff not only were pleasant but knowledgeable. I spoke to Leticia in records not once but three times , and she took the time to help me. I was impressed… Thank You Polk County…

If I can give them negative stars I would, but that’s not an option. I believe this review deserves attention though. Future business owners and future home owners beware of Polk county’s permit department or what I call a scam. They exist only to take your money. A few years ago, I purchased a property with the intention to start my business on said property. I went to the permit department to see what structures I could get on my property to operate efficiently, effectively & legally. I did everything they asked at the time and after, thinking everything was good, spent over $40,000 in equipment. Again, it took me a few years to do this; saving every single penny to pay for this. This past month, they recanted and sent citations to tell me I have to remove everything because they can’t issue a permit because the permit technician gave us the wrong information. When I tried to send in the correct permit application, I had questions and called the department. After being on the phone all day being transferred many times, with everyone either giving the wrong information or not being able to answer any questions, I finally got a response the next day. This person, the supervisor, after telling him the situation, proceeds to tell me that any permits I apply for will get denied as the buildings on my property have “maxed out” any additional changes I’d like to make. These buildings were existing and the previous owner had multiple storage units on the property also. If you can move from Polk county do it you would save yourself money in the long run.

I leave a message at 9a.m. and can't get a call back the same day. It has taken me over a month to resolve a building permit. Now it is hindering my house from getting built and costing me extra money. Do they care? Answer is no. Website is difficult and the whole process takes you through many loops. Some features on the website do not work on the mobil site which would have been nice to know. Also you call and one person tells you something different from the last. $45 permit, hours of website/phone time and over a month.

Yes.
The prices have a range but most standard items are about 85.00 plus fees
Yes.
If it is wooden or chain link and under 8 ft then no.
You will need one only if in state easement
I would call the permit office and ask them personally. Just to save yourself a lot of headaches later. we just got a shed and everyone told us we didn't need a permit, even the permit office website said if it was under a certain square foot we wouldn't need one and ours was under the square footage. after calling and speaking to someone to triple check we found out we infact did need one regardless of the square footage that the information on there website wasn't up to date. so it's best to speak with someone there to play it safe.. some people will say yes, some will say no my advice is to get it straight from them so there's no problems later.
If it's under an acre or 2, then the Army Core of Engineers doesn't seem to care. Dig away. Just don't mess with flowing creaks.
Do I need a permit for replacement windows
No sir, it does not stop you from your permit but you will need it before you schedule an inspection.
Yes

They don't close at noon.. you can't walk a permit thru after noon.. it takes about 3 to 5 hours to walk one thru.. that's why they stop accepting us at that time
Contact the county or city permitting where you live via e-mail. Include your address of course.

Yes, you will need a permit for a wheelchair ramp. The building division has plans you can use and the permit is free.
Are you wanting to register as a contractor?
Yes
Are you within the city limits or unincorporated Polk County?
You can still get the permits, just go and filled the paperwork, but it also depends if the work does not involve an ingernier planning the changes, in that case you may need to talk to a professional first.
