Except for Bascom Palmer, this entire system is a mess. For years I have tried to get a primary care physician at UM, because the facility has a decent (thought not great) reputation. I made appts months in advance only to repeatedly have them canceled weeks before the appt. (Dr. Katelin Snow was the worst) There was no acknowledgement that they should try to get me in sooner so again I had to wait months between appt that were eventually cancelled. I finally went to the downtown campus because I was fed up. When I got there the doctor that I was supposed to have an appt with had "a family emergency" which I found out about after I checked in. The doctor they gave me was a resident DO (fresh out of school within little patient experience) not an MD. I felt like a guinea pig. They changed increased my cholesterol medication -- without looking at a blood panel - to a dosage that my insurance will not cover. Now, I can't get in touch with the doctor to make a change that would be consistent with my insurance. This wasn't the only bad experience I had with UM. Previously I had had a gynecologist, Dr. Karen Simmons, that I liked. Unfortunately she retired during Covid. She notified me of her retirement but this medical system has no system to move you to another doctor. Again, I was left out in the cold and when I called for an appointment I was given a random nurse practitioner because, you know, its a hospital and patients are actually allowed to talk to real doctors. This is absolutely the worst medical establishment I have every dealt with. The technology is abysmal. There is no communication within the system between medical professionals. And, there is absolutely no communication between the medical staff and patients. If you have a question, or a problem medical or created by medical personnel, it is your problem. I plan on going to another health system and would recommend that anyone looking for quality healthcare to go elsewhere.

For a college system that preaches itself as prestigeous and expensive, you would think it would reflect on their health system. The majority of UHealth facilities are straight from the 1960s-1980s, many facilities are in dilapidated condition, nothing special about the service, and their parking fees are a joke. Baptist Health system does every single thing better. Jackson Health is propping up UHealth system.

I had a very horrifying experience at the UM dermatology hospital. I went to see a dermatologist which removed a mole from my leg and sent it out for a biopsy. Mind you, the dermatologist, the UM hospital and the lab provider are part my in network and therefore I should have paid only $11 for the deductible. Three weeks later, I received a bill for $522 for the biopsy. I have been battling with the UM billing department and my insurance. It turned out that the doctor s office (whomever he/she responsible for sending the biopsy to the lab) did not even bother to check if the lab was in my in network and they sent it out to their default lab without even asking me if it was ok. And most importantly, they did not even try to obtain a pre authorization to see if the lab they intended to use was in my in network. Now the insurance is trying to help me but because the biopsy was done in an out of network lab there s no much they can do. The UM billing department doesn’t want to hear any reasons and they are convinced to be in the right. I even had it escalated to the supervisor. When she eventually called me back had an extremely arrogant and defensive attitude. She did not let me talk and she did not want to hear my case. She said she will have a supervisor call me which in return I asked:”are not you the supervisor?” And she answered she was, but she will have another supervisor call me to re enforce what she told me…essentially their mistake (which they are not admitting nor accepting) and they force me to pay the bill. Absolutely horrifying experience. I have no issues with the doctor I have see, but being backed up by such an awful billing department made the all experience a nightmare. I have spent the past 3 weeks every day at the phone trying to solve the issue. Stay away from the UM hospital or expect to pay exorbitant bills when you might be actually covered by the insurance. Update 03/08/2022 On 02/16/2022 I went back to the doctor s office to try to sort out the issue. First the lead nurse told me the UM forces them to use that specific lab which is out of network (nobody ever ask me about it). Then the doctor came in and told me that they were able to find an in network lab for future procedures (which made think: “why did not do that before?” “Was someone too lazy to check with the insurance and just chose the default lab?”). Then the doctor told me that he was going to write an email to the director of the dermatology department and see if she could do something about it. Well it has been over 3 weeks now and nobody ever contacted me. I call the generic number (since it is impossible to find a direct way to talk to someone) and see if I could talk to the head nurse. I left messages and nobody ever called back. Meanwhile I have been harassed by the billing department to pay the $522.

It's there, but it's really hard to figure out where to go once you've parked. It's even harder to find your car so you can leave.
