I have only one question....why was my brother turned away from this facility? Was it because he was a Veteran? Because he suffered from Mental Illness? Or perhaps he wasn't knocking hard enough on death's door? Doctor's, Nurses, Case Workers tried for eight days to have him transferred, only to hear "he's not quite there yet". His last request was to be with family & not die alone. Thanks for nothing!

My mother spent the last 9 days of her life at this facility and we couldn’t be more blessed with the care she received or the environment she was in. The experience was nothing like what I had imagined it would be. As soon as we arrived, we felt a burden lifted. The surroundings were peaceful and the staff was very calm, kind and competent. They cared for my mom and the entire family with skill, tenderness and grace. I had heard great things about Lower Cape Fear Hospice and our time there certainly exceeded our expectations.

absolutely awful. my mom was taken there the night before she passed due to pain.i knew how sick she was but did not know she was going to pass away the next morning as i made that clear!. i asked the nurses to please call me if i need to rush back i went home to nap and shower. the next morning i woke up to missed call. they told me she passed away and they held her hand the whole time. i was devastated i wasnt there!! they should have called me ealier to let me know it was coming close and they did not i will forever hold this guilt. not to mention the nurses basically forced me in the room while i was outside of it just trying to get myself together. also the name is horrible lower cape fear? ugh gives me the chills that my mom passed in a place with a name like that.

My husband had been very sick for months with complications from liver disease. He had severe abdominal pain and was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center 10/14/19. We were told that surgery wasn’t really an option and that he was going to die without it. Within minutes of that diagnosis, the representative from Lower Cape Fear Hospice arrived to tell us that there was a place for my husband at their care center down the street. In less than an hour he was transported there. They provided him a nice room, continued medication so he was comfortable, advised me what to expect, offered food and beverages etc. There were doors out to a patio off of my husbands room so we could let fresh air in which he always loved. In just a few hours my husband passed away in a peaceful, tranquil setting with caring, professional medical staff nearby. I knew the day was going to come that my Eddie was going to pass away but I didn’t imagine the caring of strangers would have helped me through that time. Once Eddie had passed, the staff neatened up his bed and room and put a handmade cloth angel on his bed to honor his service in the Marines and they had also hung a red white and blue wreath on his door. We were able to sit with him as long as we needed to say our goodbyes. Thank you Cape Fear Hospice. My Eddie died with dignity and grace because of your wonderful care.

Current visiting guidelines for our hospice care centers: Visiting hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Two visitors are allowed to stay overnight. Visitors must be at least 12 years of age. All visitors will be screened before entering the facility and all visitors MUST wear a cloth face mask while walking to and from the patient's room, and when are center staff and/or housekeeping are in the patient's room. Visitors are not allowed to congregate in common areas of the facility.
We appreciate your thoughtfulness! Right now, are care centers are only allowed to accept individually packaged food items such as pre-packed chips, cookies, candy, soup cups, etc. This is, of course, due to current COVID restrictions. The small games would be most welcome. Thank you for thinking of us.

Hospice care is a Medicare benefit. All services, medications and supplies related to hospice care are covered. Sadly, only 10% of patients take full advantage of the Medicare benefit due to late referral. It is important to know that anyone can make a referral to us and our team will work with your doctor to determine eligibility. More than 90% of patients are cared for where they live: private home, assisted living or skilled nursing facility, or hospital. When pain and symptoms cannot be managed at home, we have hospice care centers that are exclusively for our patients.
