The trails wind around so much I ended up going in circles for about 45 minutes before I figured out how to find stairs. Needs to have markers pointed back to the stairs out. Afterwards ranger saw two ticks on my face which she pointed 👉 out for me to remove. Took a shower at home. I had weed rash on my legs and forehead. There’s no cell reception. If you can't get out you might spend the night there. To get from parking to stairs going down takes 25 minutes. Some alternative stairs are blocked off as closed. Thick brush blocked any good views. Old growth trees 🌳 are neat. I don't recommend this place.

I missed this nature preserve on my last visit to Shades, that was a mistake! After a a bit of a walk through flat woodlands less than a mile from flat fields, you suddenly hit some of the most beautiful landscapes in Indiana. Do not pass this place up!

A great escape with beautiful natural geologic features. Trail signage could be improved in a few spots - it can be easy to get disoriented and lost for a while, but all in all a nice peaceful hike.

Great place to hike in central IN. You have to enter Shades State Park and then take a right to get to the trail head. The trail is well marked and medium difficulty. There are a few stream crossings so be prepared to have wet feet. If you like plants, there are tons of beautiful forest interior plants. This is a less crowded place to hike than Shades and just as beautiful.
