By law, you receive automatic, annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) to your retirement benefit when you meet one of the following eligibility requirements: 1. You are age 62 and have been retired at least five years; or, 2. You are age 55 and have been retired at least 10 years; or, 3. You are a retiree who has received a NYSTRS disability benefit for at least five years.

There is no post-retirement death benefit for Tier 1 members. The member can check his/her Retired Member Profile, produced annually, to determine if s/he selected a retirement payment option that would provide payment to a beneficiary.
If by "correct" you mean change your option election, you can do so no later than 30 days after your retirement date by filing an Election of Retirement Benefit form (RET-54.6) with NYSTRS. If you are referring to an error made in the calculation of your benefit, there is no statute of limitations for correcting the error.

Retirement benefits are directly deposited on the last business day of each month.
You can file your retirement application with NYSTRS as late as your retirement date, but no more than 90 days before. To be on the first available payroll after retiring, you should generally file at least 30 days in advance.
To receive a full year of service credit with NYSTRS, members must work 170 or more full days in a school year (i.e., the equivalent of 9 months of full-time service). Members can receive a maximum of one year of credit within a school year.
