I give them 3.5 stars. We trying out there hand rolls. They were really good. But there BOMB rolle was greate, just missing some actual peppers for better flavor.

Absolute horrible experience thanks to Ryan. My family and I were told by him that there was a 45 minute wait as he had his arms out walking us towards the door. I was confused as the restaurant was fairly empty; I called the restaurant immediately after asking if there was a wait and the same man that kicked us out (Ryan), answered and told me there was no wait and to come right in. I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but it is clear to me that this was racially motivated. I highly suggest choosing a more welcoming/inclusive sushi spot.

Not the most authentic sushi restaurant, but their limited menu - sushi quality, presentation, and service is definitely above average for the area, which says a lot for someone who is keenly wary of the bar/food dichotomy prevalent downtown. Most frequented by locals who have few other options to dine in the evening it serves as a niche spot with a rather pleasant, unique vibe and location due to bordering Balboa Park. I give four stars because like so many downtown establishments, 'mystery' charges can appear on your bill if you're not careful. Still, Hive is a great spot worth visiting with friends or solo as long as you don't expect a "true" Japanese sushi experience (at a MUCH higher cost). Compliments to the chef.
