Love this hike! There is a small parking area near the trailhead, but according to the reviews online and the people we talked to there, parking there will get you a ticket. You want to park about .25 mile up the road on the side, right before the Angeles National Forest sign. The hike is about two and a half miles. It goes straight up, so you need a bit of endurance - but it's doable. The views from the top are amazing! 360° views of the entire area, and a really cool seating area where you can picnic. People do bring potatoes here - we brought our own and decorated. I think it's a really cool tradition that makes this hike truly unique. Oh! There is an abandoned truck at the trailhead that somehow went over. Don't worry if you see it as it's been there for a while already!

It is very beautiful going up and comes with a good workout! The entire way up is all uphill so good luck!

Questions & Answers

So what is up with the potato thing ?

People take potatoes and once they've reached the top your suppose to decorate or just place a potato up there. It got its name potato mountain because potatoes used to grow up there.

Ok, not asking, but Potato Mountain did not support a population of potatoes. Its the rocks, due to erosion, that have ended up at the bottom of P. Mt. Many, many of these rocks are the size and have the look of potatoes. Hence, potato mountain.

Seeing a bear is quite rare. There are no wolves in Southern California. Make decisions based on logic and sound rationale rather than irrational fear.
