Charged me $5000 for not receiving a return they owed me money on. After 19 years of paying my taxes on time, and never receiving a failure to file letter, they can keep this garbage state to themselves.

After spending 30 minutes bouncing around telephone trees and an unsuccessful on line experience to find out about an overdue refund on 2018 tax return, I finally reached a live body that transferred me to a line that had a message that they were too busy to answer.

NO ACCOUNTABILITY WHATSOEVER! When the bank was levied for $103K and there was a tax error. After the taxes were fixed, they did not return $23k of what they took. I keep asking where the money went, but no answers. They kept pointing their fingers at the bank, but the bank was mandated by them to give the money. It's theft, I'm telling you. These are thieves right here, squeezing the average joe out of every penny.

They don't answer their phone. They have a very gleeful smug voice on the recording the makes you listen to all kinds of information you don't need and then explains that they're not going to answer the phone because they are just too busy. Then it tells you to call back later and hangs up on you! Just another example of how state employees feel it's totally cool to treat arrogantly. We pay them well, we give them great benefits, amazing job security, great health plans, and a fantastic retirement system. The least they could do is treat citizens with respect and go out of their way to be helpful.

The tax board keeps demanding my 2020 return. I have mailed it twice and they cashed the check the first time. Cannot register online as tax board does not recognize my SSAN. I have used the same SSAN for 70 years. Cannot speak with anyone after calling. Am at a loss as to what to do.
Am not a contractor due illness , never finished course, have formal demand for payment going to a collection agency , why
You need to call, email, or go to the FTB office. Be sure to have the check number and your account number when you reach out to them.
You can request an abatement of penalty through a form. It'll take a few months. I'd engage your tax pro to confirm it's worth fighting
Yes you do need an appointment. Make sure to make it at least a few days in advance.
No. The franchise tax board deals with California taxes. Federal taxes are the responsibility of the Internal Revenue Service.
