Sunny, nice day out there so took the motorcycle instead of the truck. Stopped by at Home depot down the street for some tools. Heading back home and saw United Rentals on my right, Worked with them couple years back for some equipment rental at my previous company. Decided to roll in and see if they provide forklift rentals. Due to open gates, I assumed it is open to public. I work for a well known construction supply company and we will be in need of 2 extra forklifts for yearly inventory next month, I am an Operations Manager and in need of these forklifts for a week to move extensive amount of pallets during count. Rode my motorcycle back to the bulding to see if they provide any forklift rentals. This guy in United Rental pick up truck in front of their office, gives me a disturbing look. That look got under my skin and decided to leave instead of stopping by. Took right turn stopped by at the light down the street to head back home, same guy cuts me off at the light 2 feet away on my lane, asking me agressive questions and mentioning about his camera is recording. I told him I do business, we move pallets and need equipment. He cuts me off on the lane almost on my foot and takes off in the middle of heavy traffic due to green light. Will reach out to their corporate for this hostile behavior. Do not ever invade my personal space ever again or cut me off unsafely like that. My reaction will be very different than today. Reach out to me and I will talk to you in person. The vehicle was labeled United Rentals, also the person was bold, assuming he is the location manager.

Questions & Answers

What's the right earthmoving equipment for my job?

Excavators are heavy-duty diggers. Typically, the deeper the hole, the bigger the machine required. They can drill, break rocks, create trenches or dig large holes for foundations. A compact excavator is ideal for heavy digging in a tight space. Loaders are perfect for scooping up loose material and depositing it elsewhere. They move well in soft soil but cannot dig very deeply. Bulldozers' giant blade attachments can push large quantities of dirt, debris, shrubs or building remains to where you want them. A bulldozer can also be outfitted with a rear "ripper" that can tear through rock and soil.

Ensuring you have the right size bucket for your project is important for proper production and reducing wear and tear on the equipment. There are several factors to consider and calculations to perform to determine the correct bucket. Generally, you'll use OEM specifications, including the maximum lift capacity, bucket weight and bucket capacity. Find more information and how to calculate whether the capacity of your bucket will work in the United Rentals article, “How to Choose the Right Bucket for Your Excavator or Wheel Loader.”

What size skid steer do I need?

The size of skid steer depends on the job you wish to perform. The smallest skid steers typically have a rated operating capacity (ROC) of about 700 pounds and an overall weight of about 3,000 pounds. This smaller size is ideal for a homeowner project as it can usually fit through a walkthrough backyard gate. A very large skid steer can have an ROC in the 3,000-plus-pound range for someone who doesn’t have room for a full-size backhoe or wheel loader. Read more about the seven factors to consider when renting a skid steer from United Rentals.
