Beautiful coastal hike where you can see elk out in the wild! I did not know elk lived on the coast of California at all so this was so cool to see. The hike isn't too challenging, the trail is mostly flat. You get amazing coastal views right from the start but you do have to hike at least a couple miles to start seeing the elk.

About 10 miles round trip. It's really pretty if you get a sunny day. Very well maintained trail. There were a few bugs. Bring sunscreen and lots of water.

The trail itself is casual. The summer fog was rolling in from the Pacific and obscured mist of the views until you got to the end. But the views are spectacular once you get to the point and bird rock. The elk were also grazing nearby the trail and it was charming to see them so close.

Thomales point is one the best hiking trails of Northern California. It's 4 to 5 miles from the head to the end of the trail so a trip to the end and back is probably 9 miles of easy to moderate hike. From the beginning you can spot elks from a distance you would need binoculars to really appreciate the sighting. However 1 to 3 miles into the hike 2 herds of elks were grazing right by the trail and some cross the trail.

They are gorgeous, but keep the distance, look at them from far away. A pack of eild elks can be dangerous!

No. May be for the first mile or so but definitely not after that. While doing this hike, I saw a couple of strollers on the way that were left abandoned by their owner to pick up on their way back
