My fiancé and I lived here for about 1.5 years. Overall, we really enjoyed our time here! Krystal in the front office is great and the maintenance men are so awesome and really timely at getting things done (one of the cons is you’ll get to know them very very quickly into living in the building due to a lot of outdated features of the building.) It’s a great building downtown, and also affordable, but there are a LOT of leaks, plumbing issues, elevators not working, etc. They’re in the process of doing major HVAC repairs right now, which will make the apartments so much better… in the future. I would be pretty wary of moving here anytime soon unless you want to be displaced from your apartment and sent to a hotel for “up to 6 weeks” but overall, I found this to be a very enjoyable place to live! There is a very well maintained pool and all of the tenants are super friendly!

All around my year and a half stay here was pretty good, i had a 2 bedroom newly renovated apartment. There were a lot of maintenance requests i had to send in, mostly because of the outdated hvac system, but the maintenance men were always super nice and would fix it that day or the following day. Sadly though, the winter storm that hit early 2021 ruined one of our bedrooms. The pipes burst, ruining the wall and carpet causing us to no longer be able to use that room. I understand that it wasn't their fault, with such an old building, but they didn't compensate us at all! We still had to pay full rent even though we were down to one bedroom... not only that, they had fans running in that room 24/7 for a few weeks making our electric bill almost 200$. Other then that i have no complaints and still enjoyed my time living in 910 Penn and I'm glad they are slowly fixing the place up.

I honestly can't believe this apartment complex is still in business. About a year ago, I moved to Kansas City and put a deposit on an apartment at 910 Penn with my sister. The apartment was falsely advertised to us as they only post pictures of their newly renovated units on their website and on zillow. When my sister and I applied for a unit through zillow, it showed pictures of a renovated unit for a fair price for the middle of Downtown KC. My sister and I were getting ready to graduate from our undergrad programs in two different cities hours away from Kansas City and unfortunately, were unable to tour the apartment in person. When we spoke to the woman over the phone about our move-in date, she lied to us about the quality and condition of the apartment and when asked for pictures of the unit, had an excuse as to why she couldn't provide us with any and made us believe that the apartment we put the deposit down on was newly updated. When I showed up on move-in day before my sister, I walked into the apartment and literally started laughing as I thought it was a joke. It was not what we put a deposit down on at all; it was outdated and gross, the carpet was disgusting, the kitchen cabinets were broken, the kitchen and living room were separated by sheet metal painted white to look like drywall. It was very far from what we thought we were buying into. When I realized what was happening, I began to cry and refused to move into the apartment and asked to step out to speak with my sister on the phone. The apartment manager was very rude to me and was only concerned about leaving to go home; she mocked me stating, "Did you really think you were going to get one of the newly renovated apartments at this price," and laughed when I expressed that I felt I was falsely advertised the apartment. She screamed at me for being upset and unsure of what to do and snatched the key out of my hand and kicked me out of the building to wait on the street alone for my sister and Dad to show up. When my sister showed up, she asked to see the apartment and was also shocked and disappointed. When questioned about the zillow listing, they denied one even existed and asked to see it. When we showed it to them, they denied it was put up by them. We calmly asked the manager that our deposit get refunded as we were not to move into that apartment. My sister also asked that the expense of our moving trucks get covered as we were falsely advertised the apartment and would need to find another option elsewhere. They refused to give us a refund for the deposit and ripped up the lease in front of us so we left and had to rent out a motel for a month as our new jobs started the next week. We also had to put our belongings into storage while we looked for a new apartment. The manager called us the next day to ask if we had changed our minds about the listing and proceeded to make us feel like we had put them out by refusing to move in. Moving is already a huge financial burden and the fact that we paid for 2 moving trucks to travel over 6 hours, to not move into the apartment, and then having to put our things into storage and rent out a motel for a month put us back a lot financially. Do not move here. The manager knew we were hours away and could not tour the unit in person, they saw their opportunity and took full advantage of us. They are liars who will just steal from you.

I feel like this review is necessary because I see them renovating the lobby and the hallways to try to make the building look like it is taken care of but that’s about as far as it goes. Within the last year I have been through so much stress with this complex that I won’t be able to list it all. Definitely worth mentioning though is that the managers decide when to switch between AC and heat for your apartment. You can’t have both. And they don’t get it switched on the first hot or cold day either. Not that our unit ever worked to begin with. This winter my fiancée and I slept in heavy coats under piles of blankets in below freezing weather because they hadn’t switched the building to have hot air. When they did switch it, we realized our unit wasn’t putting out anything beyond room temperature air so we were lent a space heater for the winter. Talk about a high electric bill. And let’s not forget spending 100° Missouri summers without air conditioning. We were told that the problem could not be fixed and there was nothing they could do. I would have to go outside to feel the breeze because I would get so hot trying to wash my dishes or clean. None of the apartments have dishwashers and the laundry room floods at least once a month. The washer and dryers frequently double charge you or don’t even dry your clothes at all. They are extremely old and outdated and leave your “clean laundry” still feeling dirty because they are so full of gunk. Now let’s talk about the blatant disregard for residents once you sign a lease. Since June 2017 when we moved in, the parking lot and the street in front of the building was being worked on for about half of the time we lived there. From October to spring 2018 we were lucky to find street parking close to the building because the whole back lot was shut down. Several people (including myself) got $75 parking violations for street parking too close to out of bounds, even if it was just for a few minutes to run in the building for something. The “garage” under the lot was never opened to residents even though it is mostly empty 90% of the time. When asked why residents couldn’t park there until the lot was fixed, the manager stated that unless we paid extra then it was out of the question. Last point I want to make is that after we moved out, we did a final walkthrough with one of the managers who cleared us to move out and said everything looked great. Just today we received a copy of the form that we filled out and signed except “water damage on the wall” had been added in ink pen after the fact to make it look like we agreed with our signatures to whatever that meant. Considering how we left the unit in the same condition we got it, we are very upset and appalled that the 910 Penn staff continues to nickel and dime us for everything that they can take in very shady ways. Whatever you do, do not sign a lease agreement with 910 Penn and ignore these reviews. You will end up paying so much more because of their long history of neglecting to care for the building and spend money on what residents actually need updated instead of getting a shiny new leasing office.
