How much time is needed to do the driving tour and enjoy the battlefield and signage at a leisurely pace? Is trying to visit Bentonville and Averasboro too much to attempt in a single day?

Visiting the grounds at Bentonville and doing the driving tour can be done in under two hours easily. I highly recommended doing the two walking loops here as well to get an up close experience. The one near the visitors center is 1.5 miles, and the other just down the road is two miles long. The grounds around the visitors center and the center itself are closed on Sundays, but the driving and walking tours are not.

You can do Bentonville in a day driving in your own vehicle. But you can get a guided tour on a bus for a small fee.
