It depends on whether the date is "sell by," "use by," "best by," or something else. "Use by" is generally the estimated expiration date, while the others are for other purposes. Might have been a bad supply week. If it didn't smell bad, it would have been completely fine to drink. Expiration dates are usually estimates, and therefore don't necessarily dictate whether the product is actually expired.
Many times the distribution center will send outdated product. If the employee were to unload the truck quickly, they may not catch it. ( No excuse I know, just a theory. )
