It depends on the time you would be staying in Japan. You can stay up to 90 days under a standard U.S. Passport Book as long as you have a both an arrival and departure plane ticket when you go to board your flight to Japan. If you are staying for longer than 90 days you will need to obtain either a Work or Student Visa depending on your reason for going. Obtaining either can be very difficult so be sure to do proper research into whichever one you need.
