I usually go online and check on the park site. There's usually a way to reserve so that you can ensure no one grabs your space. Also, if you will be using large equipment it helps keep you from being turned in. I would check the site. Google park reservations.
We just brought our stuff and had set it up where we wanted. People do show up extra early for certain spots. We never asked anybody we just did our thing and it was fine. The police officers didn't seem to mind at all. This was a few years ago
