There's a line to make an appointment best to get in it
I just did this today. We got there at 3am and had 70 people in front of us. My son was taking test for his learners permit. Around 7:30 they gave us an appointment time for 8:30 which allowed us to get tight in at that time. Before the sun came up there were hinders of people in line behind us. The DMV rep told me on our way out they had to turn away 300 people that were there by 7. They only planned to service 200. So yes you can do a walk up in Saturday but I wouldn't get there any later than 4am. Bring a chair and a sleeping bag for the long wait. Good luck and thanks for your service.
U can try, just be early
Walk ins are only on Saturday. Be advised though, you will have to get there super early. They DMV starts handing out time slots at 715, and if you don't get a slip you don't get seen that day. We ended up doing it twice. First time we showed up at 6 and we're waiting in line down the street. Did not get in that day. Next Saturday we showed up at 4 and got in. I'd say make an appointment as soon as avaliable and try the Saturday if you want.
