Yeah , they are usually short handed. It's more of a budget issue.. Not their fault. They do what they can. You can always ask for a manager to ring you up if you really don't want to scan your own groceries. But good luck because most of the time they are already in a register.
There is generally someone manning the express checkout, so if it's the only lane open I use it regardless of how many items I have. I'm not trying to stack a whole cart of groceries on the stupid self check scales.
I go as late at night as possible so that the only cashier has someone to help
