It really all depends all your preference. The softail is a larger bike with more power. The slim is agile and smaller than a touring bike. The sporty comes in lower price ranges, agile, super customizable. The down side to the sporty is simple, Resale value. Many people find they outgrow the sporty fairly quickly and have a hard time getting their investment out of them. If you're a larger person the sporty is going to feel like riding a bicycle with an engine. But if you're on the smaller size of folks, it may be a perfect fit. I tell people all the time, if you even think of a bigger bike, learn on it. Respect it when you're new to riding, and you'll grow into it's power.
The soft tail is a big bike. A good beginner bike would be a sportster 883. You could get used to driving a smaller bike then later on maybe trade in for an upgrade. Beware of too much power until you get used to how a motorcycle handles. The 883 still hauls butt.
