Julie, while Ron has answered your question, we do NOT recommend using a ROLLER to compact the soil unless you use it VERY VERY LIGHTLY and only if absolutely needed. I'd recommend that you look over RED HEN TURF FARM's OFFICIAL Guide on how to prepare for and install sod - available on our website. If you go to redhenturf.com, underneath our Barn Log in Yellow, look for the words PDF LIBRARY, click there and look at the 2nd Link called Prepare for & Installing & Patching with Sod - if you review that and have more questions, please feel free to call us so we can more easily talk about your project 574-232-6811 - THANK YOU FOR ASKING! - Lisa, Red Hen Turf Farm Here's a DIRECT LINK to the document I'm referring to: https://redhenturf.com/pdfs/B1.5%20Prepare%20for%20&%20Installing%20&%20Patching%20with%20Sod_ver1_01-29-14_printable.pdf FOR MORE on this topic: https://redhenturf.com/blog/index.php/from-the-red-hen-faq-vault-soils-for-lawn-considerations-for-seeding
