She is trying to mark her territory. This is a new home and she is trying to adjust. If she doesn't have a nice large kittie condo I would suggest getting her one and put it in front of a window if possible. You can get one at Ollie's cheap. Around $60 for a multi level 41/2 - 5ft. When she scratches where she is not supposed to lightly smack her paw (I only use my finger to do this) and place her at the scratch Post using her paws to make scratching motion. Shelters and rescues are over crowded and she will adjust even less without her family
Try Feliway or a pheromone collar to make her feel more secure. A cat tower would be great, or try placing a scratching post where she's clawing things. The SPCA will take her, if you aren't able to get her behaviors under control, or a very may be able to help with behavior modification ideas.
I work there and yes we will take her but we do owner surrenders by appointment and this way you can speak with a staff member.
They will take her
