I'm from new York and trying to visit this amazing place, any recommendations? Do I have to rent a cabin to go hiking or can I do just the hiking with out staying in the cabin?.

Free to visit. Not cheap but there are a lot of nicer cabins in the area, many are smaller with a romantic vibe and some very large that accommodate groups. There is even a place that Rents lux tree houses that have been featured on the Travel Channel. Other than cabins and hiking there's little in the immediate area. If you want more to do you're about 1hr each direction from quaint and eclectic Athens or large and diverse Columbus.

I will say there's only a couple decent hotels in the area though.... And depending on what's going on in the area the weekend you plan on coming you'll want to reserve a room way ahead of time. Furthermore, *pro tip* if the paranormal is something you're interested in please be sure to check out one of the various pages on the internet regarding haunted Ohio specifically the Southeastern Ohio region.

You can just walk in and hike. Ash cave is a great starting point or start at old man's cave visitor center. You can go to the check in to get a magazine that has tons of adventure ideas Inside.

There are Hotels and cabins in the area. I would definitely stay at one as there is a large amount of hiking and it is nice to have a place close by to rest. There are also many other attractions in the area. Over 20 miles of bike and walking paths, a river that has tubing and canoeing.. downtown Logan, etc. Honestly an extended weekend is best to soak up all nature has to offer in this beautiful area!

From New York, it is quite a drive. The seven major park areas are not far away from each other, but you must drive to each and some days, the trails are crowded and you have to wait a short time to hike them. Staying at a cabin might afford more time to enjoy the trails. But no, you are not required to rent a cabin or get lodging to visit. All the hiking areas are free to hike and park.

If you are looking to stay and camp then yeah renting a cabin would be better, however if you are just taking a day to hike then moving on then I wouldn't rent a cabin.

You do not need to rent a cabin to go hiking. The state park is open dawn to dusk and there is no charge to get into the park. I would recommend all of it. It's simply breathtaking. I do highly recommend Ash Cave though. Of all the caves this one was my favorite

You can just walk right up, that's parking near by. There's also several other parks within a reasonable distance. Definitely would recommend trying to get two days out of them all, try going easily to half, then hit the remaining half the next day

You don't need to rent anything. It's totally free and it's well worth the experience. It's a great place

Rent the cabin. It's about the experience. Plus you'll be tired after

There are 7 different parks all near each other but you would want to drive to each. They have some amazing sites in each. There are a variety of inexpensive cabins and shallet in the area as well as camp grounds and hotels. I would recommend getting a cabin if you can. They usually come with a jacuzzi and it's a nice break at night after a long day of hiking.
