Plenty of possibilities for primitive camping along the Horse Pasture rd., all are first come first serve basis. As mentioned above state parks around have plenty of camping with hookup, some are even full hookup. Though you need to be carefully as not to camp where it is prohibited, check SC DNR website for details

Are there places to do actual camping? Not "hook ups" or rail road tie boxes fill with gravel and cute little signs marking your "camp site"?

This is not state or federal land so camping rules are not the same. CAMP ONLY IN DESIGATED CAMP SITES! CHECK MAP AT ENTRANCE! It is a awesome place but got a ticket for camping. Found a great spot, had fire ring built and tent pad cleared, didn't know it wasn't a designated site and there are no signs or warnings other than the map at the entrance. Must say even at $120 a night(ticket cost) was the best camping spot I have ever had.
