Not much to see here when we went. The beach was closed to protect breeding birds.

Questions & Answers

This place is mentioned when I look up crabbing in CM. Is this true?

No! A long ago article written by an unknown contributor mentioned this in the Courier Post & somehow google picked it up. It’s totally inaccurate. Thank you for asking!

I came there on a walk at night to see the ghost crabs, will they be doing it again anytime?

Hello! The ghost crab program was stopped because they were held on the Coast Guard Beach. The CG shut down all public access to their beach three years ago due to liability issues and we were not allowed to run the public program. Our beach will reopen October 1st but has a federal guideline on all refuge grounds to not do anything that would endanger any species and the biologist didn't want the program using the foam sprayed into the crab holes to track and cast the network underground. The friends group will ask again this winter to be able to run the ghost crab program next year with a new Refuge Administrator who may not see the foam as a problem or perhaps he will contact the Coast Guard and negotiate with their commander who is now in charge. Our fingers are crossed. June

No. But there are seasonal spots and you'd have to apply to FWS & if approved, need to volunteer 25 hours weekly.

Can you go there if you're in a wheelchair?

Carol Chappell | Oct 22, 2021
W. B. | Oct 22, 2021

You sure could. Might be a little rough rolling but as long as you got someone good to assist you you should be just fine. They have handicap spots close to the trailheads. Maybe even scout the trails that have planks like a boardwalk prior to rolling down one. Now some trails there are complete sand so it would be no good for a wheelchair but there are observation points as far as what I saw when I was there it could assist someone in a wheelchair to catch the view.. I sure hope this helps and you're able to see this wonderful refuge. Be safe be smart out there.

Are you aloud to fish here? Im looking for a good place to take my son to fish while im in wildwood crest in a week

I was there about 2 weeks ago. One path we took was blocked access to the Ocean. If you can find a path to the Ocean I'm sure you could surf fish there. Maybe a better place would be go the the Ocean Drive bridge. I used to go there with the children. Good place for snapping blue. Go when the tide is running.

Are dogs allowed (on leash)?

Hello Julie. No, they are not, sorry. We love our dogs but the endangered birds and other wildlife feel them as a threat - leash or no leash. Thank you for asking first!
