What is causing the black areas on tombstones? We never spotted this in past years and how do we stop it from covering the whole stone? It seems to be the lower and flatter stones ? It’s almost like a chemical put down may cause it!

My grandmothers gravestone is about 40 years old. It stayed "clean" for most of those years. About three-four years ago a circular blotch ( 3" in diameter ) developed and seemed to increase in size a little each year. I "diagnosed" it to be mold' I was unable to wash it off or rub it off . Then I decided to treat it more harshly ... I poured bleach on the spot, rubbed it lightly, then poured water over it to rinse off the bleach. The circle of mold was gone instantly.
