Is there a free way to do a patent search, rather than having a 3rd party company do it for you?

Yes. One option is to go to a patent office, the U.S. Had facilities at each of its offices to allow the public to search for themselves. If you live near Detroit, Dallas, Denver, San Jose, or Alexandria, Virginia that may be an option for you. You can also search all published and patented inventions in the U.S. or the European Patent Office online from any computer connected to the internet.

You can alwsys use Google Patents but for a more extensive search , there is a library/computer center at the USPTO in Alexandria where non USPTO csn conduct searches.
