People dress up or down but definitely depends on what your plans are for the evening.
People do dress up a little, which is nice. I'd call it "business casual."
It's reasonably casual.

Wear what you feel comfortable in and casual. The plays and musicals are great.

It's LA some people come fancy, church nice, date nice, casual, comfy and fun. The plays are awesome, so come and just enjoy.
Casual
I went to a Saturday matinee. People were dressed casual-nice. A few women wore skirts, but most wore nice slacks or jeans with a blouse or nice sweater and heels/boots/flats. There's no formal dress code though.
It's come as you are as long as you're clean & neat no one will hassel you.
