You dont need one but yea it makes things smooth. Just be ready to donate on that day and for that to be one of your two donating days. Also be prepared for at least being there for a few hours. They have to ask you questions, do a physical, take a small quiz, and then donate. About 2-3 hours after that it should take you 1-2 hours

I called today and was told first time donors do not need appointment, just come on in. First come first served, and don't be a walk in between the hours of 5 and 6 pm.
