I believe these days it is by appointment more often than not. It is well worth the visit though. I remember it from my youth and it was really interesting and educational. You can feel the history of Hamilton indeed.
They are only open on Friday and Saturday... Not sure about Sunday. They close around 4 if I remember right. You'll probably have to call Butch at the monument to find out for certain. I don't remeber seeing it open in the "off season". I live fairly close and pass it often. I hope someone else on here can give you a more precise answer. I'll see if I can find the literature my granddaughter picked up when we visited earlier this year. If I do, I'll edit the answer and post a photo.
