Because hundreds of years ago. According to indian legend, there was a natural land bridge there. And when the people on both sides of the river started warring with each other. The gods destroyed it... Or so the story goes.
A massive landslide blocked the river temporarily allowing the natives to cross from side to side. Over time the river won out and pushed through again.
