The square was named for James Madison, fourth President of the United States. Madison Square is probably best known around the world for providing the name of Madison Square Garden, a sports arena.
The park is a tiny island of the natural world, in the midst of the city. Also if you look on the NYC Parks website you will get a snapshot of the parks history. That can give a bit more, in respects to the overall sense of the place. To put all that differently, it's a nice place to chill.
