Most parking around 7th Street and other commercial areas tend to be free but timed. They will chalk your tires and write you a ticket if you overstay. There is no free parking around the train stations. Also make sure your inspection and registration is up-to-date as they ticket for that as well.

Most of the parking you need a permit for and they will ticket you if you don't have one. There is some free parking however you have to search for it. Always park head in because that is another thing they will ticket for.
