It's very close by, takes about 15 mins by car. I don't know how long by public transport.
It's right on the blue line Metro so you have time to leave the airport for a bit. Don't stay gone too long, I'd plan on being back at the airport about 1.5 hours before your flight, and depending on train schedules and how far you go, it could take 30 minutes to get back once you start heading back.
It's very close. I took a taxi from downtown to the airport for only 15 minutes.
