No, there is no extra hand. That is an urban legend. And contrary to other posters' answers, John Bradley's father was NOT one of the flag raisers (though this was not confirmed until 2016). And when the actual sculptor, Felix De Wheldon, was asked about a 13th hand, he said "Why would anyone need 13? 12 was enough." There are 6 men and their 12 hands depicted, and no others.
Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz (identified in June 2016), Michael Strank, Franklin Sousley, Rene Gagnon, and Harlon Bloc
The Iwo Jima memorial is reopened and you can get right up to it. We were just there 2 weeks ago
There are several replicas around the nation. One is at the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA. Another is at the Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C. and there are a plethora of smaller ones around the nation erected by local Marine Corps Leagues and such.
Unfortunately none of them are here today. Charles Lindberg was the last survivor of the historic moment.
I'm sure you can.it is a beautiful memorial
If you are looking for confirmation of who is in the photo, you might try looking for pertinent Facebook groups/pages. The National Museum of the Marine Corps nearby in Triangle, Virginia might be a resource to contact. Good luck.
