Each airline is different. Talking to a ticketing agent or calling beforehand will give you more information, and some airlines offer the options to let children flying alone to board with the first group.
Southwest airlines will give you an escort pass to go to the gate, if your son is flying Southwest. Ask the ticketing agent. I've done that many times to help my sister when she was flying out from BWI with her infant daughter
Talk with the airline as each is slightly different - depending on his age, they will have someone escort him to the plane and pick him up when he arrives. What you should ask is how far can you go with him to the boarding gate which can depend on the airport
