Its frustrating to know that you literally have to line up 5-6 or more hours in advance for a place that opens during normal business hours. Drive slow, don't make any unnecessary turns, park, and wait in line. Bring a chair and a charger. Blame Covid and the DMVs lack of empathy or their inability to provide reasonable protocols.
First off, I've been told by other customers that appointments are released a little after midnight. Sounds crazy but that's your best opportunity to get an appointment. Secondly, unfortunately you are at the mercy of the police officer. I hear they've been towing cars although they are quite aware of the fiasco with DMV. Try to reason with the officer and invoke empathy from him or her and perhaps he or she will be in a benevolent mood that day. You're basically at their mercy.
