Your kitty has a sort of warranty where you can bring him back within a certain amount of time. Its a short period, so see the vet for a free check up and do this asap. Also the animal shelter is known to change their procedures, so call them, too. If you do return your kitty to them, make sure they know he is sick so they can isolate him from the rest of the cats. The same thing happened to me although not at that particular shelter and the kitten that I took in had distemper gave it to my cat and they both died so it is possible that it's distemper or something like that I would take the cat to the shelter immediately and make sure they take care of it I'm sure they're willing to do so
They can take him in like that, but they're supposed to test and treat any illnesses before they adopt out animals. I hope your kitty gets better. Try calling them and asking them If there's anything they could do.
