Most recycling collection programs are single-stream. But you shouldn't crush cans in a single-stream system. That's because it's harder for the electrical current which helps separate out aluminum cans at municipal recycling facilities to identify them as cans when they're crushed. Check with your local recycling center for their policy on this matter.

April, The state requires that we inspect all products that you bring in for a refund. To do this we have to make sure the items were purchased in CA. To do this we look for the CRV , Ca cash refund, CA Redemption Value notice on the bottle can or plastic. Prior it has always been etched in the top of the cans, now it can be on the top, on the label or even on the side near the barcode. Hence the no more crushed cans. I am so sorry, but the state does change the rules and regulations every 6 months. I can assure you we do not like it either. I hope this help's you to understand the situation. Thank you for your question.
