Purchased online or at the door. If you are a veteran with proof it's free. I suggest you go to the website and read up

Online first Wednesday of every month at 9am. Tickets are free but go very quickly. September is already booked. They are going to try allowing walk ins in September during the week , the weekends will still need tickets. I went in may and everyone who showed up without tickets was turned away.

There are two entry methods at the museum. You can get a time entry pass on the website or you can stand in line at the museum for a limited number of day-of entry passes. It is generally easier to get a timed entry pass as the line is fairly long.
