Why did the installer of our new unit give us a certificate and tell us that was what was required to scrap the old one when the biggest scrapyard in the general vicinity doesn't accept it? It seems a little counterintuitive

Call the office Monday through Friday 8 to 6 and they can provide you with what is needed. It's not uncommon and it shouldn't be an issue getting you something in writing with their letter head.
