Ive easily spent 2-3 hours in the museum and still have not seen it all just because its always busy
You could probably go for 2-3 hours and see/do enough to make the visit seem worthwhile. But you could also spend 8 hours there and feel like there's more to explore. It is less a museum and more a welded-together adventure dreamscape.
I agree with the previous answers if you want to do the whole thing prepare to spend a few days. It's amazing and gigantic! We have been several times and still see new things Everytime.
I think it would depend on the stamina of the people you were with. My people were 9 and 7 and we were there for 6.5 hours and mainly left because we were exhausted. If everyone is in pretty good shape physically and fairly adventurous, plan on a full day.
