I still go with every 3k miles and I use synthetic oil. Changing it frequently is not a bad thing.
Depends on your vehicle and on how you use it, but the general rule is usually every 5k miles. Newer models come with oil monitoring, view the options on your dashboard. Refer to owners manual for detailed requirements for your vehicle.
