You can buy tickets on the spot, most people wait in the long lines for tickes, but there are ticket keyoskets on the back side of the memorial building near the South reflection pool. Very fast, much easier.
It is free to visit the north and south pools, but to go to the museum, you need to buy tickets, if youre going on weekends, i suggest you to buy tickets online
I actually walked right up to buy a ticket without waiting. There are self service kiosks you can use to buy a ticket. While people stood in line to buy from a human, I strolled right in. Save time & go to the kiosk!

To go inside the memorial, you do need tickets. To view it from the outside you don't
Hey guys I was there las week (15 th January 2020 . The museum It’s Free on Tuesdays after 5pm. The machine’s won’t work, you still have to line up and they’ll give you your free ticket. I gave a donation as well, they’ll have the donation box inside the museum as well. Remember FREE ON TUESDAYS AFTER 5 pm.
The outside memorial and pools are free. I don't know about the museum; you may have to buy tickets
